Clinton County Joins Healthy Neighborhoods Fund Initiative

Clinton County has been selected to receive a $250,000 Healthy Neighborhoods Fund grant in order to become a healthier and more active place for residents of all ages to thrive.  The Clinton County Health Department will work with the community in order to provide access to healthy and affordable food as well as improving access to safe places for exercise in order to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The team involved will work with the city of Plattsburgh as well as fourteen surrounding towns to implement Complete Streets policies, which makes streets safer for pedestrians to walk and bicycle around town, certify local food retailers as healthy food vendors, and to redesign open spaces for physical activities for both adults and children to enjoy.

Eating healthy and exercising are key components in order to live a long life and to feel good about yourself. Receiving this grant will make it easier for the Plattsburgh Community to access healthy eating alternatives and to promote an active lifestyle.

FEMA Youth Preparedness Council

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, better known as FEMA, is accepting applications for its Youth Preparedness Council.  This program will teach children ages 13 to 17 how to become better prepared if an emergency hits their community.

If selected, you will serve for a one-year term where you will share your opinions, ideas, solutions, and questions about disaster preparedness with FEMA leaders. This program will provide an opportunity for young people to make a difference in their community by giving them a sense involvement and teaching them how to take on a leadership role.

To get a role on the council, children must be dedicated to public service, interested in making a difference for their community, and show potential to impact the community as a national advocate for youth preparedness.

If this sounds like something you are interested in, applications are due by March 2, 2015. For more information on what the youth council does and the application process you can visit http://www.ready.gov/youth-preparedness-council
